So why are so many meetings awful?
Not only are they awful and don’t accomplish anything, they’re boring.
I’ve been thinking about that lately after coming across the rules Chuck Jones used for the old Road Runner cartoons. There were clear boundaries. Clear expectations. And because of that, the cartoons stayed focused, consistent, and surprisingly effective.
It got me wondering:
What if meetings had rules like that?
Not just the usual “show up on time” kind of rules. But thoughtful rules that actually improve the quality of the conversation.
I worked with a scientist a while back who was giving a presentation to other scientists. Normally, these hour-long presentations used around 50 slides. He decided to try five instead.
Not only did he cover everything he needed to cover, there was actually room for discussion. Questions. Reflection. Conversation.
Imagine that.
Maybe one useful rule for meetings is simply: “No more than five slides unless corporate headquarters or the Vatican gives special permission.” 😁
I’d love to hear your ideas.
What’s one rule you think would make meetings more useful, more engaging, or more human?
Come on over to LinkedIn and join the conversation there.
