According to Timothy Gallway in The Inner Game of Work, focus is a critical atribute, but when we try to force focusing on something, it exhausts us. I hadn’t thought of it in quite that way.
Think about the new projects at work where we saluted and said sure, and then found it was all we could do to even attend those dreaded meetings. And we gave only halfhearted effort to the tasks that came from those meetinhgs. It is not uncommon for people to try to dump those responsibilities so they can spend time on things that they actually want to focus on. All the more reason when we lead projects to make sure that we find ways to engage peope, otherwise they merely comply, but we get no real engagement or enthusiasm.
